Whitewater

France’s mythic Ubaye Valley, home to Rafting Magazine’s Expedition: Alps. Against the backdrop of the rugged French Alps, you’ll enjoy a totally unique river experience. The region’s stunning glacial canyons and delightful cuisine will make you see France in an all-new light. Depending on river flows, we expect to boat several of France’s best rivers, including:

  • Ubaye (“OO-buy) - Continuous Class III, IV and V sections of river boating

  • Bachelard - A continuous class IV creek in the Ubaye Valley

  • Guil - A tight continuous class III/IV slalom

  • Durance - An epic big water style river with multiple sections

Workshops

What makes this expedition different is what you bring to the program. Through our application process, we assess your whitewater skills and create coursework to help you learn and succeed. Among other subjects, workshops will include subjects like teamwork, trip leading, and paddling skills. Workshops and group events will also focus on:

  • Rafting, Kayaking, Inflatable Kayaking, and River Boarding

  • Via Feratta, hiking or canyoneering excursions (weather permitting)

  • Nightly guided discussions

  • River films

  • Dry land skills sessions

Cuisine

Get ready to get fancy with Chef Roxane! As our hostess will apply her wonderful culinary talents to prepare meals for Expedition participants. Her meals include a remarkable catalog of rustic and haute French cuisine. We can also adapt menus to also address dietary restrictions. Whatever you need, Roxane has your back!

Culture

The expedition is about more than just a trip on the river… What better way to push our limits and expand our horizons than experiencing whitewater and outdoor culture from a new perspective? We’ll be working with local boaters to share stories and skills, and to learn what makes France’s whitewater culture unique.
